The Sons of the Dragon
  • Release Date: October 10, 2017
  • Content Type: Book
  • Description: “The Sons of the Dragon is a novella which was published on October 10, 2017, as part of The Book of Swords anthology. It chronicles the early lives and reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings, Aenys I and Maegor I, written by Archmaester Gyldayn of the Citadel of Oldtown. The story was later slightly expanded and included in Fire & Blood.” (Westeros.org)
  • The anthology contains 16 new stories from 16 different fantasy authors. George R.R. Martin’s 42-page expansion to the history of Westeros serves as the endcap for the book. The tale begins in 28 AC during the final years of the reign of Aegon I Targaryen, ‘The Conqueror’.
  • Reviews: The anthology has an average rating of 3.68 (out of 5) on Goodreads, but that covers the entirety of the set rather than The Sons of the Dragon individually. The individual tale carries a slightly higher rating at 3.78.
  • Considering Martin made several edits to the story to both expand and fix inconsistencies, the Fire & Blood edition is recommended.
  • Purchase: Updated version in Fire & Blood | The Book of Swords
