- Reviews: With season 5 beginning to diverge from Martin’s source material, reviews were down slightly from previous years, but still overall positive. It has a 93% rating from critics and a 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Charts: While the overall season maintained a similar opening night average as season four, at 6.88 to 6.84, both the opener and finale pulled in 8 million viewers in the US. Season 5 was the first to eclipse the 20 million mark for a season average of 20.2 million in total (opening night plus the following week).
- Awards: Season 5 won the Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, Directing for a Drama Series, Writing for a Drama Series, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister). Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) also picked up nominations for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The season also received nominations for Best Drama Series from the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and People’s Choice Awards.
