Game of Thrones - Season 5
  • Release Date: April – June, 2015
  • Content Type: TV
  • Description: Two key players in the fate of Westeros meet far away from Kings Landing, the rise of a new powerful faction in the capital city, as well as dramatic twists for the remaining Stark children.
  • Season 5 brings together a wide variety of source material, primarily drawing from A Feast for Crows (Book 4) & A Dance with Dragons (Book 5), it also includes unused elements from A Storm of Swords (Book 3). Storylines also pull from insight provided by George R.R. Martin related to the forthcoming The Winds of Winters (Book 6) and original ideas from the show’s executive producers.
  • Reviews: With season 5 beginning to diverge from Martin’s source material, reviews were down slightly from previous years, but still overall positive. It has a 93% rating from critics and a 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Charts: While the overall season maintained a similar opening night average as season four, at 6.88 to 6.84, both the opener and finale pulled in 8 million viewers in the US. Season 5 was the first to eclipse the 20 million mark for a season average of 20.2 million in total (opening night plus the following week).
  • Awards: Season 5 won the Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, Directing for a Drama Series, Writing for a Drama Series, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister). Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) also picked up nominations for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The season also received nominations for Best Drama Series from the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and People’s Choice Awards.
