A Song of Ice & Fire (Game of Thrones) Canon Timeline

Game of Thrones Canon Map

Below is an easy-to-follow list of canon from the Game of Thrones / Westeros Universe. You may click on any item to see more information about the title, as well as how to find it. The list is in canon timeline order, not release date order. In-universe years are identified around Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros – BC (Before Conquest) & AC (After Conquest).

How do the seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones TV show line up with the book series? When in the timeline are the adventures of Dunk & Egg, and in what order should they be read? What is the best order to read, and watch, the tales of the Targaryen conquest and uniting the Seven Kingdoms?

Notes

  • While HBO’s television shows are based on the books, George R.R. Martin has commented that based on the variances and the fact that the Game of Thrones show ended before the book series was completed, fans can distinguish between ‘book canon’ and ‘TV canon’ to clarify any differences.

  • * – Martin has outlined the years for books 1-5 (298 – 300 AC), while the events of those books cover the first five seasons of the TV show. However, the shows take a season-a-year approach and until the final two books are published their exact placement in the timeline is unknown.
